Its an addiction, not a disease?

Alcoholism does seem like an addiction to me, more like an addiction to smoking or drugs or gambling than a disease. However, some people are genetically susceptible to alcoholism, just as others are genetically susceptible to heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, etc. Unless you have genetic testing early on, you don't know whether you are one of the susceptible ones when you first start drinking. You may ume that you can stop at any time (as most people do), only to find that you can't. It's also a bit naive to ume that people who develop cancer and heart problems are somehow not responsible for their problems, when in many cases it is their own bad habits such as smoking, overeating, poor diet, and not exercising that have contributed to the development of their health problems.
